Wildfire Hazards

The likelihood of wildfire destroying Teton County, Wyoming, homes was all too evident during July 2001, when the Green Knoll Fire erupted on the Bridger-Teton National Forest southwest of several large subdivisions. Hundreds of residents were evacuated from their homes. Be Prepared by knowing if you live in a Fire Evacuation Zone.

By clicking on the Green Knoll Fire Map, you can see how quickly the fire moved over the course of three days, July 26-28, 2001. The concerted response by the area's emergency services demonstrated that preparedness is essential to a successful outcome.

However, as with any natural disaster, the weather was a partner in containing the wildfire and in limiting the amount of damage. In this case, no structures were lost. Next time, however, homeowners may not be so lucky. Visit the Firewise site for suggestions on creating a defensible space around your dwelling.
