Avalanche

Both backcountry users (skiers, snowboarders and snowmobile operators) and motorists are at risk of being caught in an avalanche. According to the Avalanche Handbook (published by the USDA Forest Service), "Avalanches are common on steep, snow-covered mountains everywhere. Although most are remote from man and his improvements and damage little except timber, some do considerable damage to man and his works."

Is your home or place of recreation at risk of an avalanche? Check out the interactive Avalanche Slide Path map.

Do you regularly drive on roads that put you in danger? Do you travel in the backcountry on slopes that put you at risk because of weather and snowpack? Between 1913 and 2007, Teton County has had 41 avalanche deaths, more than quadruple the amount of any other area in Wyoming. Before heading out, be prepared by checking on the local winter weather and snow conditions.
